This vintage children's Literature book was first published in 1939, by Ludwig Bemelmans. John Bemelmans Marciano is the grandson of Bemelmans and he continued to write many sequels through the 1940s and 1950s. This blog is about the first book written by Ludwig Bemelmans. It is measured out to be one of the significant classics of children's literature.
The narrative is set in a Catholic boarding school in good old Paris. Madeline is a seven years old and she is the bravest of all of the other girls. In this original story, Madeline is sent to the hospital to be later diagnosed with a ruptured appendix. Hours have gone by after her surgery and Madeline was greeted by her fellow classmates and Miss Clavel. She was given toys and candy and a pretty doll house from her papa. However, all Madeline was concerned about was showing her classmates the scar on her stomach! The students returned to the boarding school with Miss Clavel and soon was off to bed. Then suddenly, Miss Clavel sensed that something was wrong, so she hurried to the children's large bedroom only to find all of them crying! Miss Clavel asked them what was troubling them? So, they cried out that they also want their appendix's out, too! While Miss Clavel stood in amazement, she told the young girls to thank the Lord that you are all well.
Motivational Activities
1.Have children write a brief poem as if they knew Madeline. What would you write to her to get well?
2. Make Madeline and her fellow classmates out of Popsicle sticks and decorate them with yellow construction paper hats.
